The new Football Operations Building and attached Indoor Practice Facility, both designed by IMEG, together are modeled by The Weidt Group to use 66 percent less energy than the ASHRAE 90.1.2007 baseline as part of the MidAmerican Energy Commercial New Construction Program. The project is pursuing LEED Silver. The two-story operations building includes strength and conditioning space, locker rooms, a lobby and entertainment space, sports medicine, equipment distribution and maintenance. The mezzanine includes meeting rooms, office space, conference rooms, multi-purpose recruiting space, and video operations. Other spaces include exam and treatment rooms, physical therapy, laundry, kitchen and dining. The practice facility includes a large indoor field with field turf, three filming platforms, equipment storage space and other support spaces.
The project’s main energy efficiency feature is a water-to-water heat pump system that uses the campus chilled water return loop as a heat sink to heat the operations building; the system also creates usable chilled water as a byproduct for use within the same building or elsewhere on campus. Other key energy-efficiency and sustainability features include heat recovery, daylight harvesting, LED lighting, dimming daylighting controls, occupancy sensors, low-flow plumbing fixtures, radiant floor heating (under the indoor practice field) and natural ventilation (in the indoor practice facility). A MidAmerican Energy Incentive of $743,200 resulted in an adjusted incremental energy investment construction cost of $875,604. With annual energy savings versus baseline projected at $356,157, the energy investments have a payback projection (with incentive) of 2.5 years. Additional key designs by IMEG include the technology systems for the audio-video wall, an FM-compliant sprinkler system, and special heating and ventilation systems for the equipment drying room.
