Multicampus Integration

Genesis Health System

IMEG provided engineering design and medical equipment planning for Genesis Health System’s $139-million Campus Integration at Genesis Medical Center, 1227 E. Rusholme St., Davenport, Iowa. The 205,000 square feet of new construction and 115,000 square feet of renovation will position Genesis for technological advances and the changing needs and expectations of patients.

The project features the construction of a seven-story bed and surgical tower, along with renovation and relocation of existing departments to create space for the tower. The tower will contain 11 operating rooms, one hybrid operating room, PACU, outpatient procedures care center, endoscopy procedure department, sterile processing department, emergency department, 96 inpatient beds, kitchen/cafeteria, lobby and offices.

The overall challenge of this major renovation is ensuring the design and construction limit disruption to the hospital’s ongoing operations. Specific issues include crossover from existing to new systems; integration of building automation systems; site utility distribution and relocation; phased construction, and low floor-to-ceiling heights in areas undergoing renovation.

The most challenging phasing involved relocating the existing facility’s buried electrical, steam and chilled water utilities that resided within the footprint of the new addition. IMEG worked closely with the owner and the rest of the design team to implement a utility relocation plan that was constructible, cost effective, and which had minimal downtime.

Building systems feature an 800-ton chilled water plant and 400 BPH boiler. Sustainable features include BAS controls, LED lighting and occupancy sensors.
