The 175,000-SF New Research Building will be located on open space (surface parking and landscaped areas). In years past, this was a residential neighborhood with small single family masonry residences that have been
razed leaving buried subsurface rubble.
The facility replaces older, less efficient research space with new, highly flexible space to accommodate new research teams and interdisciplinary research. It will house the Department of Genetics, the Center for Genome Sciences & Systems Biology, the Department of Medicine and the Department of Developmental Biology. The building is expected not to exceed six stories with a basement and penthouse for mechanical space. The remainder of the building will be designed and fit-out for research labs
and associated lab support functions.
The project includes a 700-SF data center for the research facility. The data center space did not include a raised floor and the cooling is provided via dampers in the ceiling above the cold isles and the heat return is provided in the ceiling above the hot isle. Back-up power for the data center is provided by a static uninterruptable power supply located within the data center space.
