Analyzing 5 key areas of risk can uncover breaches in your hospital’s resiliency

By Mike Lawless

The realities of today’s world are making it ever more important for healthcare institutions to be disaster resilient. Being prepared to respond to disasters today, however, is an increasingly complex task due to the multiple types of disasters, their frequency, and severity.

Beyond natural disasters, mass casualty events, and infectious disease outbreaks, hospitals now also need to plan for their ability to respond to active shooter events, cyber-attacksand other unforeseen situations that could compromise their ability to provide for the safety, well-being, and care of patients, staff, and the community.

To help healthcare organizations begin to assess their facilities’ resiliency, I joined several other IMEG healthcare experts from various disciplines – MEP, structural, technology, and security – to produce our firm’s first executive guide, “The Evolving Importance of Healthcare Resiliency: Preparing Your Hospital for a Crisis.” The free guide offers a broad, multidisciplinary look at five often overlooked or misunderstood aspects of hospital risk management:

  • Natural Disasters and the Structural Integrity of Your Hospital
  • The Effect of Disaster on Your Hospital’s MEP Infrastructure
  • Hospital Physical Security – Beyond Guards and Cameras
  • Reacting to Mass Casualty Events or Infection Outbreaks
  • Protecting Your Hospital from Cyber Security Vulnerabilities

In addition to the guide, you also can watch a recorded webinar on the topic presented by me and IMEG Director of Healthcare Mike Zorich.

Our intent for the guide and webinar is to provide a starting point for healthcare organizations to evaluate the resiliency of their facilities. Only by thoroughly considering each area within your institution can you ensure your hospital is better prepared to handle a crisis – regardless of which type comes your way.
