New Hotel Development - Structural Design

Hyatt Place & Hyatt House

IMEG provided structural engineering design and civil review of plans and plats for the initial concept of the new developer-led hospitality project in East Moline, Illinois. The co-branded hotel is the signature project of The Bend on the Mighty Mississippi, a 132-acre redevelopment project by Great River Property Development. The new nine-story hotel will feature 134 upscale Hyatt Place rooms and 99 all-suite extended-stay Hyatt House rooms with amenity spaces including an indoor pool, gathering and lobby space, meeting rooms, porte-cochere, fitness center, outdoor terrace spaces, outdoor seating space, and a rooftop bar and restaurant complete with sky lounge.

The structural design required the nine-story superstructure to be supported by 60-foot long drilled piers extending to bedrock with a grade beam system supporting the building. Other structural systems included:

  • Concrete on the composite metal deck floor
  • Roof systems clear spanning between the room walls
  • Low-profile beams supporting the concrete floor deck at the corridors to facilitate MEP and utility systems routed in the ceiling space through the corridors
  • Cold-formed stud-bearing walls with sheathing
  • Lateral load resisting system consisting of nine-story core walls with cast-in-place reinforced concrete shear walls at the stair and elevator shafts
  • Steel moment frames with wide flange beams and columns at the drivein canopies and porte-cochere
