New Metropolitan Detention Center

Los Angeles Metropolitan Detention Center

LEED Silver

Located in the heart of the downtown civic center for one of the largest cities in the country, this 96-hour detention facility strives to organize and present itself in a manner that befits its civic location, addresses community concerns, incorporates building and systems design elements compatible with LEED requirements, and gives staff a safe and efficient, state-of-the-art operational facility. All inmate transport activities are tucked within the building envelope and hidden from public view. Intake and processing occur at Level 1, with administrative functions occurring on Level 2. Building support services, loading dock, and property division are below grade, keeping those activities out of sight. Housing units are all on Level 3, accomplishing two key goals: (1) efficiency and safety of the staff and (2) improved lighting conditions for staff and inmates through the use of rooftop light monitors above each day-room. Sustainability & LEED measures:

•22.45% water use reduction

•21.76% savings over Title-24

•Reduced lighting power density by 0.524 w/sf

•4 credits achieved for optimizing energy performance

•No ozone depleting refrigerants specified in the HVAC units

•CO2 sensors were installed in all areas of varying occupancy to reduce the amount of fresh conditioned air
