‘I want to help create a safer, cleaner world’

Engineers Week Q&A with Huy Nguyen, IMEG Structural Engineering Designer

Q: What motivated you to become an engineer?

A: I decided that I wanted to become an engineer because I wanted to help shape the future. Engineers not only get to solve modern-day problems, but we get to come up with solutions that help build the foundation work for the future as well. I want to help create a world that is safer and cleaner to live in, not only for myself, but for all of those around me.

Q: What excites you about your chosen career?

A: What excites me about structural engineering is being able to see your work come to life. It takes a lot of time, effort, and teamwork to be able to design and draw up a structure. Being able to see the finished product is such a rewarding feeling and it allows you to appreciate all the hard work and dedication that went into creating the structure that stands before you.

Q: How do you see engineers playing a role in shaping the world of tomorrow?

A: Engineers design different aspects of society with longevity in mind. We do not want our creation to only last a few years or a few decades. We have the responsibility to make sure that our design can withstand the test of time. Creating something that not only lasts but is sustainable and economical is a core value of engineering, and now, more than ever, engineers emphasize building a cleaner and more environmentally friendly future, so that there will be a tomorrow to look forward to.

Q: What does innovation mean to you?

A: Innovation in my field is improving on known practices. I hope that in my field of study, technology can innovate and improve the different processes of construction that can be harmful to the environment. It is important to explore and seek newer and innovative techniques to build a more sustainable future.

Q: What advice do you have for those considering a STEM-related career?

A: A STEM-related career is such a rewarding field to go into. It may not always be the easiest, but it is a field that allows you to learn so much about the world and will bring excitement into your professional life. Don’t quit when things get hard, just remember that everyone started where you did, but they persevered and got to where they are. How much you put in is what you will get out of it, and if you have a goal, make sure you work for it, because you can do anything you put your mind to.
