Argonne National Laboratory Materials Design Lab wins honorable mention in safety

Argonne National Laboratory’s new Materials Design Laboratory (MDL) has received an honorable mention in the safety category of Lab Manager’s 2022 Design Excellence Awards, which honor excellence in research laboratory design, planning, and construction. IMEG provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, and technology engineering as well as architectural lighting and building performance analysis services.

The MDL is a state-of-the-art laboratory and office facility that enables Argonne to maintain a leadership position in energy science research. The third-floor radiological laboratory suite required extensive collaboration between the project team and Argonne’s Radiological Safety Officer to ensure that appropriate radiation safety features were incorporated into the design and construction. The design also included engineered building systems controls for shielding, containment enclosures, HEPA filtration, and radioactive waste to ensure worker safety during operations.

The highly sustainable design is LEED Gold certified and compliant with the U.S. Department of Energy’s High Performance and Sustainable Buildings requirements.
