Athletic Center Facility Expansion
IMEG provided engineering design and services for the University of Wyoming’s plans to triple the size of its current athletic center facility, known as the Rochelle Athletic Center, into a state-of-the-art training facility – the High Altitude Performance Center.
This facility expanded the existing 48,000-sf Rochelle Athletics Center into a 126,000-sf collegiate athletics complex. The new facility focuses on academic success, nutrition, strength and conditioning, sports medicine and rehabilitation, and recovery facilities for University of Wyoming student athletes. The facility includes cutting edge technology, tools, and equipment that enhances both physical and academic performance. These innovative features include a high altitude performance chamber that changes the atmospheric pressure inside to help athletes adjust to high altitude training; a two-chamber therapy pool with both hot and cold water temperatures; two gymnasium-sized weight rooms containing state-of-the-art equipment; and an indoor training track with sand pit. IMEG provided design for the new facility’s MEP systems as well as updates for the existing facility’s systems.
IMEG also provided the MEP design and construction administration for the 48,000-sf original building in 2001. The facility, which is located adjacent to the War Memorial football stadium and the Arena Auditorium basketball arena, provides the primary locker, weight room, whirlpool/injury treatment and equipment storage facilities for the Cowboy football team. In addition, the football coaches’ meeting rooms and offices, multipurpose room for the Cowboy Joe Athlete boosters club, computer study room for all student athletes, and the U.W. Hall of Fame Gallery are incorporated in this facility.
The MEP design included a heat recovery system for the locker room, exhaust and make-up air, evaporative cooling, connection to the central University of Wyoming steam plant, a complete fire protection and detection system and special lighting in the Hall of Fame Gallery.
