New Baseball and Softball Complex

IMEG provided MEP and fire protection engineering for two new stadiums on the Indiana University campus – the Bart Kaufman Baseball Stadium and the Andy Mohr Softball Stadium. Each two-level stadium includes a team clubhouse with lockers, training facilities, and indoor hitting cages. Each field will also have concession facilities, a press box, guest suites, and spectator seating.

The university challenged the design team to dramatically reduce costs from the initial 2007 conceptual design – without significantly impacting the project goals. Solutions included reusing existing scoreboards, careful site selection to avoid unnecessary bedrock removal, and targeted temperature controls scope reductions. The baseball concourse was elevated above grade, while the softball concourse was built on-grade – each in an attempt to best utilize the site conditions to give the facility a genuine “bowl” feel. For cold-weather months, heavy-duty radiant heating systems were designed for the dugout benches to accommodate the players’ normal seating positions on top of the bench seat-back. Plumbing systems were designed to allow complete drain-down for annual winterization of the facility.

The project was designed using BIM technology.
